Combined Confined Spaces Entry & Gas Test Atmospheres Course
The Combined Confined Spaces Entry Course & Gas Test Atmospheres Course includes RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces, MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit and MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres.
The course covers the critical safety aspects of entering and working in confined spaces, and the testing of a working atmosphere to determine if it is safe for the proposed work. The confined space and gas testing training course is designed for any person who may be required to work in confined spaces and/or gas test atmospheres as a part of their work duties, or for those who are looking to enter this field of work.
Combining training for both confined spaces ticket and gas test atmospheres can offer several advantages:
- Ability to be the stand-by person that can enter confirmed spaces and conduct gas test operations.
- Many sites and employers are looking for people with confined space entry and gas tester as a requirement.

Entry Requirements
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Fitness and agility to undertake the course
- Not afraid of dark, enclosed spaces
- Level 2 LLN minimum (refer to Language Literacy Numeracy Chart)
- Have a USI or create one from: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/Digital-ID

Course Outline
By completing this course participants will gain the skills and knowledge from RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces to:
- Plan and prepare for working in confined space
- Work in confined space
- Exit confined space
- Clean up
By completing this course participants will gain the skills and knowledge from MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit to:
- Apply for permit
- Identify the scope of the permit
- Prepare for permitted work
- Work in accordance with an issued permit
- Complete permit to work
By completing this course participants will gain the skills and knowledge from MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres to:
- Prepare for gas testing
- Test gas
- Maintain equipment
Assessment Requirements
Students will be assessed using relevant assessment methods which includes but is not limited to the following:
- Knowledge evidence requires student to answer a range of theory questions.
- Performance evidence to demonstrate practical ability to enter and work in confined spaces, locate and apply relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures and confirm that the work activity is compliant, work effectively with others to enter and work in confined spaces in a way that meets all required outcomes.
- Performance evidence to demonstrate practical ability to identify type and scope of permit relevant to the job, interpret and implement permit conditions, identify changes to conditions which may lead to the permit being revoked before the job is completed and monitor hazards and hazard controls.
- Performance evidence to demonstrate practical ability to recognize and assess conditions that require testing, identify appropriate action according to procedure, take readings and interpret, report/record relevant data, communicate with a range of personnel on safety conditions and procedures.
Verification of Competency (VOC)

Verification of competency (VOC) is used to verify worker’s current competence and assists the employer to determine the skill level of the operator for the model and make of machinery and task.
The VOC is commonly used by employers during pre-employment checks, site requirements and contract negotiations. One Step Training undertakes VOC assessment either in conjunction with training or as a VOC only request to provide to employers.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued with:
- Statement of Attainment for the unit RIIWHS202E Enter and work in
confined spaces. - Statement of Attainment for the unit MSMPER200 Work in accordance
with an issued permit. - Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres.
- Students may also request an optional wallet sized card reflecting their achievement for an additional fee of $10.
