RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set

This skill set addresses the skills and knowledge to work in traffic controller in a temporary traffic management context including how to control vehicle and pedestrian traffic using stop-slow bats, hand signals and approved communication devices in the resources and infrastructure industries.
It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work in teams in live traffic environments under some degree of supervision.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 17 years of age
  • Have a USI or create one from: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/Digital-ID
  • Level 2 LLN minimum (refer to Language Literacy Numeracy Chart)
  • 100 Points of ID Evidence of Identity (see below)

 

Evidence of Identity (EOI)

  • Students must show that they are NSW residents using the SafeWork NSW 100 Points ID as listed at the following link

  • Students must bring original EOI documents that add up to at least 100 points as certified copies will not be accepted
  • The EOI documents must contain your date of birth, current residential address, photo and signature.
  • Students who fail to provide the SafeWork NSW-approved 100 points of ID will not be eligible to commence training and must reschedule to a later date, incurring the published reschedule fee.

The duration is:

  • 1 Day Training.
  • ½ day live practical assessment

Course Outline

  • By completing this course participants will gain the skills and knowledge to:

  • Stop/direct road users using a stop/slow bat and understand stopping sight distances
  • Monitor traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic management plans and traffic guidance schemes
  • Maintain traffic incident reports
  • Understand the Traffic Guidance Schemes (TGSs) also known as Traffic Management Plans (TMPs) for the site
  • Assess and respond to changes in the environment, for example traffic volumes, weather conditions, road conditions, Work Health and Safety (WHS) and operational requirements
  • Carry out risk assessments for personal safety
  • Participate in toolbox talks (specific to traffic control)
  • Use communication methods and devices
  • Conform to traffic control policy and procedures

Assessment Requirements

  • Students will be assessed using relevant assessment methods which includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Knowledge evidence requires student to answer a range of theory questions.
  • Performance evidence requires students to control traffic with a stop-slow bat and with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs according to traffic guidance schemes in a manner that is safe and follows workplace policies and procedures.

Certification and SafeWork NSW License

  • Statement of Attainment:

    Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued with Statement of Attainment for RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set which includes the following units of competency:

RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures  RIIWHS205E Control traffic with stop-slow bat RIIWHS206 Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs

SafeWork NSW License Assessment Card

  • Trainer issues the Statement of Completion for Traffic Control Work Training to evidence successful completion of training which is valid for 90 days.
  • Students undertake live practical assessment.
  • When students pass, One Step Training lodges the following document to SafeWork NSW OLE:  (Signed/completed SafeWork NSW Evidence of Identity and Record of Training for Traffic Control Work Training under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017) 
  • SafeWork NSW contacts the student via email or SMS to advise that their SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Card has been approved and the duration to expect to receive the Traffic Control Card.
  • Students will receive their Traffic Control License Card from SafeWork NSW.
  • Students may work using the Statement of Completion for Traffic Control Work Training to work until they receive their Traffic Control License Card.
